Student groups
A student group is a class: the students you teach together, kept together.
Groups are built from people already on your account. Somebody on their own account cannot be in one.
Making one
Manage teams → Student groups → New group, then a name and the people.
A group holds students and the teachers who look after them, so a colleague can set and mark work for the same class. The list shows what each group contains, such as "24 students · 2 teachers".
What a group saves you
- Sharing. Invite a group to a project instead of typing twenty addresses.
- Assessments. Add a whole group to an assessment in one step.
Groups and assessments are copies, not links
This is the part worth understanding.
Adding a group to an assessment copies those students onto the assessment's own roster. The group is not attached to it.
So changing a group later does not change assessments you already created. If you add a student to the class in March, an assessment you built in February still has the February list.
Sharing works the other way. A project shared with a group follows the group, so people added later get it.
Building groups from a file
An import can create groups as it adds people, because each row names a Student Group Name. For a new term that is usually one step rather than two.
