The AI assistant

The assistant sits beside the editor and can see the program you have open, so you do not have to paste code into it or describe what you wrote.

What people ask it

The panel offers a few starting points, and takes anything else you type:

• Explain how this works. For code you have inherited or half understand.
• Find and fix the bug. With your actual program in view rather than a description of it.
• Optimise this code. When it works but not well.
• Add inline comments. Annotates what is already there.

General questions work too: why an error is happening, how to read input in this language, what the complexity of your loop is.

Credits

Use is counted in credits, and how many you get depends on your plan. Students on an account get the free allowance whatever the account's plan, rather than the owner's. See AI credits for the figures.

AI credits are separate from API credits. Spending one does not affect the other.

When it is switched off

An account on the Teacher plan can turn the assistant off for its students. The panel stays where it is and says the teacher has disabled AI.

That setting reaches students on the account only. Teachers and admins keep the assistant, and a student on their own account is unaffected.
