Upgrades, downgrades and cancellation
One rule covers almost everything on this page:
If a change gives you more, it happens today. If a change gives you less, it waits until the end of the period you have already paid for.
Nothing you have paid for is taken away early, and nothing is charged twice.
Platform plans
Platform plans are Free, Student, Pro and Teacher. A change is judged on two things: which plan you move to, and whether you pay monthly or yearly.
| What you are doing | When it happens | What you pay today |
|---|---|---|
| Moving to a bigger plan | Today | Only the difference |
| Moving from monthly to yearly | Today | Only the difference |
| Moving to a smaller plan | End of your period | Nothing |
| Moving from yearly to monthly | End of your year | Nothing |
The order of the plans is Free, then Student, then Pro, then Teacher. Moving from Student to Pro is a bigger plan. Moving from Teacher to Pro is a smaller one, even though both are paid.
Price is not what decides it. Pro billed yearly costs $144 and Teacher billed monthly costs $25, so by price alone a step up would look like a step down. The plan and the billing cycle are two separate questions, and both are asked.
Example: moving up, part way through a month
You are on Pro monthly at $15, billed on the 10th. On the 20th you move to Teacher at $25.
- Teacher starts straight away.
- You have 20 days of Pro left that you already paid for, worth about $10.
- Those 20 days on Teacher cost about $16.67.
- You are charged the difference today, about $6.67.
- Your billing date stays the 10th.
Example: moving down
You are on Teacher at $25, billed on the 1st. On the 12th you move to Student at $5.
- You are charged nothing today.
- You stay on Teacher, with everything it includes, until the 31st.
- Student starts on the 1st, and $5 is charged then.
Your students, collaborators and saved work are all still there through that period. That is the reason the change waits rather than happening at once.
Example: monthly to yearly
You are on Pro monthly at $15, billed on the 5th. On the 25th you switch to Pro yearly at $144.
- The year starts straight away.
- You are charged $144 less credit for the days of the month you had not used.
Going the other way, yearly to monthly, waits until your year is over. You have paid for the whole year, so you keep the whole year.
API plans
The Compiler API is a separate subscription with its own plans, from Free up to Volume. It follows the same idea, but because API plans are simply a ladder of prices, the price is what decides the direction.
| What you are doing | When it happens | What you pay today |
|---|---|---|
| Moving to a costlier plan | Today | Only the difference |
| Moving from monthly to yearly | Today | Only the difference |
| Moving to a cheaper plan | End of your period | Nothing |
Example: needing more credits mid-month
You are on the $20 API plan, billed on the 3rd. On the 18th you move to the $50 plan because you are running out of credits.
- The new credits are available straight away.
- You are charged only the difference for the rest of this billing period.
- Your billing date stays the 3rd.
Example: needing fewer
You are on the $50 API plan and move down to $20.
- You are charged nothing today.
- You keep the $50 plan and its credits until your period ends.
- The $20 plan starts the next day.
Cancelling
Cancelling works the same way for both kinds of plan.
Your plan runs to the end of the period you have already paid for, then stops.
Cancelling does not produce a refund. The money you have already paid is not returned, not in part and not in full. What you get instead is the rest of the period: you keep the plan and everything on it until the day it ends.
Example
You are on Pro, billed on the 1st, and you cancel on the 14th.
- Nothing changes on the 14th.
- You keep Pro until the 31st.
- On the 1st your account moves to the free plan.
After that date your projects are all still there. What stops is the paid allowances, so anything above the free limits waits until you subscribe again.
Two things worth knowing
The API plan and the platform plan cancel separately. Cancelling one leaves the other running.
If you have a change waiting, cancelling withdraws that change first. Say you moved from Teacher down to Student, and that is due to happen next month. Pressing cancel calls off the move to Student and leaves you on Teacher, still renewing. To cancel the plan itself, do it again.
Refunds
We do not refund subscription payments. This applies in every case:
| What you did | What happens to money already paid |
|---|---|
| Cancelled your plan | Not refunded. You keep the plan to the end of the period |
| Moved to a smaller plan | Not refunded. You stay on the larger plan to the end of the period |
| Moved from yearly to monthly | Not refunded. Your year runs to the end |
| Did not use the plan much | Not refunded |
The reason is the same every time. Nothing is taken away from you early, so there is nothing to give back. You keep what you bought for as long as you bought it for.
This covers changing your mind about a plan you bought. It is separate from your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which apply whatever this page says and which we do not exclude. Our Terms of Service set that out in full.
Upgrading is not an exception
When you move up a plan part way through a period, you are not refunded for the old one either. The unused part becomes credit against the new plan, which is why you pay only the difference on the day. The money stays on your account rather than coming back to your card.
If you think you were charged in error
A charge you did not expect, a duplicate payment or a failed change is a different matter from a refund request, and we do want to hear about it. Contact us at hello@jdoodle.com with the invoice from your Plans and payments page.
While a change is waiting
Your plan page names the plan that is coming and the date it starts, and offers Withdraw the change.
You cannot make a second change while one is waiting. Withdraw it first, or let it happen. Withdrawing puts everything back as it was, with nothing charged.
