Create an embed

Every embed shows one of your projects. The project holds the code; the embed decides how it appears in your page and what readers can do with it.

So making an embed always means connecting it to a project. There are two ways round that, and they end in the same place.

• Start from the project

  You are in the editor with the project open. Choose the Embed icon in the left sidebar.

  Good for when you have just written the example and know where it is going.

• Start from the embed manager

  You are organising your embeds. Choose Create embed, and pick which project it should show from the list.

  Good for setting up several at once, and for finding a project you wrote a while ago.

Starting from a project

The quickest way is the Embed icon in the editor's left sidebar. It opens Put this project on your page, where Create embed makes one.

You can reach the same dialog from Share project, under Put it on your page. The two routes are the same screen, so use whichever you are already near.

Either way the new embed is connected to that project and opens in the builder.

Starting from the embed manager

1. Open your embeds.
2. Choose Create embed.
3. The list asks which project should this embed show. Search by name, or filter by language, and pick one.

The list shows when each project was last modified, which is usually how you find the right one among several with similar names.

Choosing a project opens the builder, exactly as the other route does.

Naming it

Give the embed a name and a description. Neither is shown to your readers. They are how you tell one embed from another when you have twenty of them, so describe where it is used rather than what the code does.

The project stays connected

An embed follows its project. Edit the project and every page showing that embed updates, so a mistake is fixed once rather than in every article.

That is worth remembering in both directions. It is what makes a typo easy to correct, and it is why rewriting an old project changes an embed you published last year.
