Is a tech degree worth it in 2024?

Puneet initially wanted to be an English teacher, but pursued a B.Tech and has experience in tech, finance, and education,

Edept aims to bring industry links to university students. He was initially skeptical about the value of tech degrees, before growing to understand two main benefits of pursuing a degree: cohort learning, and building fundamental knowledge.

It’s important as a learner to be surrounded by others. “Degrees bring together a cohort of like-minded learners, and they sort of all are heading in the right direction. Everyone learns from each other. In that sense, a degree as a concept, I believe, definitely has value.”

For those who have yet to build a career, tech degrees are “a pedestal for a career. I would still say that students need to keep an eye out for things that they could do on their own, even whilst they’re doing a degree.”

While a tech degree provides a solid starting point, as a student, you need to keep self-learning.

It’s important to build knowledge in the fundamentals of computer science

University curricula teach the fundamentals of computer science or technology that can be applied to many roles, like software engineering, product management, and data science.

They may not be teaching you the merits of Vue vs React, or the latest developer trends, because these things are ephemeral. University or college can provide resources and opportunities, but you must take the initiative to engage with these opportunities. Career preparedness is ultimately your responsibility.

How to make the most of your degree

Puneet’s suggestions to make the most of your degree:

  • Explore online resources and self-paced courses to supplement their formal education.
  • Engage in internships and real-world projects to gain practical experience.
  • Network with industry professionals and seek mentorship.
  • Participate in coding bootcamps and workshops to learn about emerging technologies.

In 2024, a tech degree is still valuable for anyone pursuing a career in technology: whether as a developer, data scientist, product manager or something else.

A computer science or IT degree offers the base knowledge you need, and a collaborative space with opportunities for extracurricular learning and career development.

And continuous self-learning and practical experience will help you to stay competitive and relevant as you pursue a career in tech.
